Answer to Q #4
Why does noir seem to appeal to a limited audience today instead of enjoying a wider following?
I believe the answer to this question is, that time has evolved so much since then and the majority have decided to evolve with it. The 1950s and Film Noir appear to be a very interesting time period, the very sexy femme fetale, neon lights, cigarettes & martinis, humprey bogart type men wearing trench coats standing under a street light on a dark night with rain slick streets, although very alluring to some, can be viewed as fantasy to others and maybe even a bit old fashion. But that just one reason, another could be thats folks just arent interested in the remeniscent nastalgia of an old time movie anymore. Especially in the present time where everything is so up to the minute, we got the internet, smart phones and even smart cars...in fact, the current trend, is all about keeping up with whats current, the newest and the latest. Whats more, is that the movies and films of that era do not fully depict all that goes on in todays times, not that they should have to in order for one to enjoy the artistry of the film however, the malice and treachary that takes place in a 2011 movie is far more advanced then the crimes and plots that took place in a movie of the 1950s era. It is my opinion that people are more likely to be drawn to films that are realistic or that they can relate to in some way. A movie that speaks to the present day and the situations that are currently taking place, so with that said, some may feel that the old school black and white noir films just arent relevant anymore.
i believe that you are right when you say times have changed. all the technology that we have today makes the times of noir’s crime fighting in the box. how we do things in this day an age takes over any thing they had back then. Its so good that they could have gotten the murder of Mr. nirdlinger down to the T. even down to the way the neck was broken. To the time of death . Even D.N.A to know who and what killed him. I over all think that you blog is good and had a lot of thought putting in to it.
ReplyDeleteI believe what you haved posted is very true. Time has evovled much, and people like you say haved evovled also. To many people the noir style, you can say is old school, old fashion. And with so much the world has going on today, people don't stop to care, or even know what film noir is. People might not even know what the word noir means, yet alone what it stands for. Not up to date on the movie's the're watch in todays time that might have a film noir style. I loved your blog, it made perfect sense, and helped me have a better understanding of Q#4.
